Cloves: more than a Christmas spice
Clove is a spice with a strong taste and aroma, which is dried from the buds of the tropical clove tree (Syzygium aromaticum). Cloves are available whole, ground, and as an essential oil. its characteristic, warm, spicy taste and tart aroma can be found in many cuisines around the world.
Where does it come from?
The clove tree is originally native to Indonesia and the Moluccas, but today it is also grown in Madagascar, Zanzibar, Comoros and Tanzania. Before harvesting, cloves are dried from hand-harvested, unopened buds. During drying, the buds turn brownish-red and retain their characteristic shape.
